How Much Protein Is in Salmon?

Updated 2026-10-08

Salmon is a convenient source of protein, but there is no single number that applies to every fillet, slice or smoked product. Species, cut, cooking method, moisture and serving size all matter. This guide explains how to use public nutrition information sensibly and how to turn it into a balanced everyday meal.

Editorial note: Editorial nutrition information only. It is not medical or individual dietary advice; follow the current package nutrition label, ingredients, storage instructions and any advice from qualified health professionals.

Salmon is a protein-rich fish

Fish is commonly included among protein foods because it naturally provides protein alongside other nutrients. Public food databases can be helpful for comparing foods, but an entry for raw salmon is not a universal nutrition promise for every salmon product.

When choosing a packaged product, use the nutrition panel printed on that exact pack. It reflects the recipe, preparation and serving basis that apply to the product in your hands.

Portion size changes the answer

A value shown per 100 g is a comparison tool, not automatically the amount in a meal. A breakfast portion of smoked salmon, a main-course salmon fillet and a sharing platter can all be very different sizes.

Read whether the label is stated per 100 g, per serving or per package. Then check the number of servings in the pack before using it to plan a meal.

Fresh and smoked salmon are not identical

Smoking, curing, added ingredients and changes in moisture can affect the nutrition panel. Do not transfer a fresh-salmon figure directly to smoked salmon; compare the product’s own protein and sodium information instead.

For a practical meal, pair salmon with vegetables or fruit plus a suitable carbohydrate such as whole-grain bread, rice or potatoes. Protein is one part of a varied plate, not the only thing that matters.
